Common drain problems in Brick homes

Brick is flat, low and dependent on pump stations, so groundwater getting into the system is the defining local problem. On lagoon and bay streets we routinely find fine sand that has migrated into the lateral through a defect and settled into a bed, root hair at joints, and grease sticking to a wall the sand has roughened. Those three together explain most repeat blockages here.

Drain and sewer service in Brick, NJ

Brick is the only town we serve where the regional treatment plant sits inside the township itself, and where one authority runs both the water and the sewer across more than seven hundred miles of pipe. That scale, and the twenty-six sewage pump stations holding it together, shapes what goes wrong in a Brick drain.

What we handle in Brick

Infiltration is the story in Brick, and the numbers are public

When groundwater and stormwater get into a sanitary sewer system that was built to carry sewage, engineers call it infiltration and inflow. In a flat, low-lying township that depends on pump stations to move wastewater uphill, it is not an abstraction. It is the thing that fills the system during wet weather and pushes backups into the lowest fixtures on the network.

Brick is dealing with it openly. The township MUA closed a loan of more than seven and a half million dollars through the New Jersey Water Bank specifically to rehabilitate or replace seventy-four sanitary sewer manholes across the township, described as showing signs of deterioration from moderate to severe. Manholes are where a great deal of groundwater enters an aging collection system, and seventy-four of them is a serious program.

The homeowner-side version of the same problem is written into the township code. Each improved property must be connected separately and independently, with grouping more than one property onto a single building sewer prohibited without written permission. The invert of a building sewer at the point of connection must be at the same elevation as the lateral or higher, never lower. And owners of buildings fronting a street with a sewage disposal line must make the connection at their own expense.

Those rules exist because elevation and separation are what keep one property’s problem from becoming its neighbor’s. On lagoon streets where the ground is low and the water table close, a lateral that is cracked, offset or sitting below its intended grade takes in groundwater year-round and hands the pump stations work they should not have.

Lagoon streets, sand, and what actually blocks a Brick line

Brick has both barrier island oceanfront and long stretches of bay and lagoon frontage, with the Metedeconk River and Forge Pond cutting through the middle of the township. On the lagoon and bay side, three things turn up in our cameras again and again: fine sand that has migrated into the line through a defect and settled into a bed, root hair at joints from the mature landscaping on those streets, and grease from ordinary kitchen use that sticks to a pipe wall already roughened by sand.

Cabling a line like that punches a hole through the blockage. Jetting scours the wall and flushes the sand bed out, which is usually the difference between calling us once and calling us every spring.

One local water note worth knowing: Brick draws about three quarters of its treated water from the Metedeconk River, with the rest from a reservoir and deep wells, and the utility reports no lead service lines in its system.

What Brick customers say

Just Drains

Local tip for Brick

In Brick’s lagoon neighborhoods, test the sump pump and the backup before hurricane season rather than during it. Pour a bucket into the pit, confirm the pump starts, and check that the discharge carries water well away from the foundation instead of circling back into the pit.

About The Area

About Brick Township

Brick spans barrier island oceanfront, extensive bay and lagoon frontage, and inland neighborhoods, with the Metedeconk River and Forge Pond running through the middle of the township. Sections residents name include Breton Woods, Laurelton and Herbertsville. The Brick Township Municipal Utilities Authority runs both water and sewer here, maintaining more than seven hundred miles of pipe, six water storage tanks, six booster stations and twenty-six sewage pump stations. Wastewater is treated at the Ocean County Utilities Authority Northern plant, which is located in Brick itself and discharges through an ocean outfall over a mile offshore.

Brick FAQ

Brick drain & sewer questions.

Why do drains in Brick back up more during wet weather?

Because groundwater and stormwater get into a system built for sewage, which engineers call infiltration and inflow. Brick is flat and low and relies on twenty-six pump stations, so extra water fills the system and looks for the lowest opening. The MUA is spending over seven and a half million dollars rehabilitating seventy-four deteriorating manholes for exactly this reason. On your side of the curb, a cracked or offset lateral does the same thing on a smaller scale.

My line clears when cabled then blocks again every spring. Why?

On lagoon and bay streets that usually means a sand bed. Fine sand migrates into the line through a defect and settles in the low spots, and a cable bores a hole through it that closes back up. Jetting scours the pipe wall and flushes the sand out, and a camera then shows where it got in. Otherwise you are paying for the same visit indefinitely.

Can I share a sewer connection with a neighboring property?

Not without written permission. Township rules require each improved property to be connected separately and independently, and grouping more than one property onto a single building sewer is not permitted except by written special permission from both the township and the authority. Shared connections are also a frequent cause of disputes when a blockage affects two households.

Who pays to connect a Brick property to the sewer?

The owner. Owners of buildings fronting a street with a sewage disposal line must make the connection at their own expense. The code also requires the invert of the building sewer at the point of connection to be at the same elevation as the lateral or higher, never below it, which matters a great deal on low-lying lots.

We had to call Just Drains last Sunday. Within an hour, Paul was here. He was able to unclog our line but found a place it was catching. They were able to get a guy here with a camera in the next hour and found our pipe was crushed. A crew was here shortly and spent the next 5 hours hand digging to our crushed pipe. They got the work done, all on a Sunday, and were such kind, friendly guys.

Within 2 minutes, a text came through stating a technician, Tim, was on the way. He called me directly and gave an ETA, and in less than an hour he arrived. Super friendly, and he saved us from disaster.
