Your basement floor drain has backed up and you are standing in it at nine at night wondering whether this is a call-someone-now problem or a Monday problem. Here is how to tell, and what to do in the next ten minutes either way.

This is the single most useful thing you can do and the step most people miss. A backed-up line already has nowhere to put what is in it. A dishwasher mid-cycle, a washing machine draining, or someone taking a shower upstairs all add volume to a system that cannot move it, and that is how a wet floor becomes a flooded one. Check the appliances first, then tell everyone in the house.
That said, waiting is not the same as ignoring. A slow drain is the early stage of the backup you will otherwise be calling about at midnight in three weeks, and it is far cheaper to deal with on a Tuesday morning.
We work out how far the problem extends before touching a tool, because a single slow fixture and a blocked main are different jobs. You get a flat price before anything starts. Once the line is open, a camera inspection tells you whether this was a one-off or something structural, so you are not repeating this in a month. Most of what we find is a cleaning problem rather than a repair one.
