Why Your Drain Keeps Clogging After It Was Cleared

Why Your Drain Keeps Clogging After It Was Cleared

If a drain in your home has clogged twice in the same year, the problem is almost never the clog you can see. It is what the last visit left behind. This is a guide to why drains come back, written for Monmouth and Ocean County homeowners who are tired of paying for the same line twice.

Why a cleared drain clogs again

A drain cable is a mechanical tool. It bores a channel through a blockage roughly the width of the cutting head, water starts moving, and everyone declares the job done. The problem is that the material causing the blockage is still there, coating the inside of the pipe. Grease cools and re-seals over that channel within weeks. Root hair regrows into it. Soap scale keeps narrowing the bore. The line was opened, not cleaned, and the clock starts again the moment the technician drives away.

The three things that actually cause repeat clogs

  • Grease in kitchen and restaurant lines. It is liquid when it goes down and solid a few feet later, and it builds in layers.
  • Roots at settled joints in older clay laterals, which is most of what is under the ground in this part of New Jersey.
  • Sand and groundwater in shore towns, where a cracked lateral lets soil into the pipe and the line fills from the bottom rather than clogging in the usual way.

How to tell which one you have

The pattern tells you a lot. A single fixture that slows gradually over months is usually local buildup. Several fixtures slowing at once points to the main line. A drain that clears completely and then fails again on a short, repeating cycle, particularly in a low-lying neighbourhood, is the classic signature of groundwater and sand entering through a break. None of that is guesswork you should have to do yourself, which is why a camera inspection is worth more than a second snaking.

What actually fixes it

If the pipe is structurally sound, hydro jetting is the answer. High-pressure water scours the buildup off the pipe wall and flushes it out of the system rather than boring through the middle of it. A jetted line stays clear for years where a cabled one lasts weeks. If the camera shows cracked, offset or collapsed pipe, no amount of pressure will fix that and you are into sewer line repair territory. Either way, you should see the footage before you agree to anything.

What to ask before you book the next visit

  • Will you camera the line before and after, and will I see it?
  • Is this quote to clear the blockage or to clean the pipe? They are different jobs.
  • If it clogs again within 30 days, what happens?
  • Is the price flat, or does it change once you are on site?
